About Auriculotherapy and How to Care for Your Staple

We perform auriculotherapy for Weight Loss, Stress Reduction, Headaches, Smoking Cessation, and a few other conditions. A variety of techniques may be employed to improve your chances of a positive outcome.

Auriculotherapy treats pain and dysfunction in the body using precise stimulation of acupuncture points located on the surface of the ear.

On the ear are more than one hundred Acupoints which relate to various organ systems and parts of the body. During fetal development, the first structure to form is the brain and spinal cord. At the same time, what later becomes the external ear also develops.

The Ancient Chinese viewed the ear as resembling an upside down fetus with all of the body parts proportionately arranged in and out of the ear. For example, the lobe of the ear would relate to the head, brain, stem, and face while the top of the ear related to the knee, foot, and ankle. The success rate in Ear Acupuncture is remarkable. Thousands of American physicians have begun using ear Acupuncture as an adjunct to their practice.

Auriculotherapy has been used successfully in both China and Greece since 500 B.C. Modern auriculotherapy was founded in the 1950's, when French neurologist Paul Nogier, MD, rediscovered that areas of the human body correspond to specific points on the ear. Medical studies conducted by the Nanking Army in the 1960's and UCLA in the 1980's have confirmed that auriculotherapy is an effective treatment.

Auriculotherapy for Weight Loss

The weight loss technique is based on the ancient art of Acupuncture. When in place, the needles/staple/ or other device causes a constant stimulation to specific acupuncture points in the ear. These points help to suppress appetite and cravings.

WHAT ARE THE RISKS?

There is a very small chance of infection with this procedure. No other health risks have been associated with this procedure.

HOW WILL I KNOW IF IT IS WORKING?

The most common effect of the auricular needles/staple/ or other device for weight loss is a decrease in appetite. Many patients experience nausea and stomach cramps if they overeat. Other common findings include a decrease in cravings, such as for sugar and sweets.

HOW EFFECTIVE IS THIS PROCEDURE?

Statistically 22% experience an aggressive or exceptional degree of suppression, whereas 60% experience a moderate suppression. An approximate 18% have a mild response or no response. There is no way to predict the effectiveness prior to staple insertion. As with any weight loss program, decrease of food intake and increase of exercise is highly recommended.

WILL IT INTERFERE WITH SLEEPING/SWIMMING/TALKING ON THE PHONE ETC.?

No. Because the needles/staple/ or other device, sit inside your ear, normal use of a pillow or phone will not bother it.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

The charge is $75 and this includes measuring of the precise acupuncture points, as many auricular needles/staple/ or other devices needed, and a follow up visit after 2 weeks. We strongly encourage exercise to enhance weight loss.

WHO WILL BE PERFORMING THE EAR STAPLING PROCEDURE?

Dr. Cody B. Doyle will be performing the procedure.

WHAT ARE HIS QUALIFICATIONS?

Dr. Doyle, a licensed Chiropractor, has been in practice since 1996. He has received been certified in this procedure and received extensive postgraduate training in clinical acupuncture. Dr. Doyle uses acupuncture in all aspects of his private practice and is proficient in both auricular and traditional needle acupuncture.

WHAT TYPE OF NEEDLES ARE USED?

The auricular needles/staple/ or other devices used are surgical steel, similar to the material used in many surgeries. Patients who are allergic to metal may have a reaction to the needles and should not use this procedure.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The needles/staple/ or other devices activate the acupuncture points in your ear that sends a message to your brain telling it that your stomach is full. They also stimulate the point to help reduce cravings. The needles have a magnetic head, which provides for increased stimulation, and eliminates the need for manipulation of the needles/staple/ or other devices to stimulate to points.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN GETTING ONE EAR DONE VERSUS TWO?

Only the left ear is necessary for appetite suppression. A very precise point is measured and then stimulated by the staple. Acupuncturists typically use the left ear for weight control and the right ear for smoking cessation. Our experience has shown that very few people will respond to auriculotherapy for weight-loss when the procedure is performed in the right ear.

DOES IT HURT?

The needles or staples are instrumentally inserted and are similar to having an ear pierced. Most people experience a small discomfort, but some don’t feel anything at all.

Auriculotherapy for smoking cessation

The needles/staple/ or other devices are placed in the acupuncture points that help decrease the addiction to nicotine and help to minimize withdrawal symptoms. Some people have experienced changes in the taste of cigarettes.

Auriculotherapy for Stress Reduction

The needles/staple/ or other devices is place on a acupuncture point on the ear known as the valium epilog. The most common report from patients who have had the stress needle placed is an increased sence of calmness and well being. They report that they are better able to cope with outsie stressors and are better able to manage stressful situations in there lives. Another common report is a more retful, longer, and deeper sleep at night.

The following instructions are for those who have had the ear staple. Remember to continue cleaning the staple 2 times per day, each and every day that the staple is in your ear. If you have any problems, please notify us at once. Ignoring a painful or inflamed ear staple can have very serious consequences.
